Lockouts
Video Transcript
If you notice a countdown on your device along with a prompt that says "Lockout service required," your device needs immediate servicing. Your handheld device may display the number of days left to service your vehicle. A lockout can be caused by many things including miscalibration, too many failed startup attempts, failed rolling retests, missed rolling retests, or suspected tampering.
You will first need to identify what caused the lockout by reading the message on the handheld. If it was due to a missed calibration, you will have to complete the calibration at your service center. If the lockout was caused by a state-regulated violation, you may be able to unlock it in MyAccount.
Make sure to provide passing breath samples moving forward to avoid entering into another lockout.
Ignition Interlock Device Calibrations and Maintenance
Each state has specific regulations regarding the number of failed breath tests allowed. Typically, after several failed attempts, your Intoxalock device will enter a temporary lockout period, preventing you from starting your vehicle for a set time. If you continue to fail during multiple startup attempts, the IID device may go into a permanent lockout, requiring towing to a service center at your expense.
A lockout is a state-mandated function that prevents your vehicle from starting. Lockouts can occur if you blow a BrAC (Breath Alcohol Concentration) above the state’s legal limit, submit too many high BrAC samples, fail to provide a breath sample, or attempt to tamper with the ignition interlock device.
If your vehicle stalls, turn the key off. Within 2-4 seconds, your Intoxalock device will recognize this and initiate a 1-3 minute countdown. In most states, once the countdown begins, you can restart your vehicle without submitting a breath sample.
If your car doesn’t start, check your battery’s health by holding down the device button for 5 seconds. You can also test your car radio or lights to see if the battery is charged. If your battery is fine, contact our customer support team for assistance with troubleshooting your IID.
If your Intoxalock ignition interlock device detects a positive BrAC reading:
Failed Startup Test: You may be prompted to retest repeatedly. You can keep trying or turn off the ignition. If asked for a retest after turning off the ignition, submit a sample as requested. All failed tests are recorded and reported. Each state has rules on how many failed tests are allowed before requiring your device to be serviced.
Failed Random Retest While Driving: You'll be prompted to retest until you pass or turn off the ignition. The same reporting and service requirements may apply.
