Random Retests
Passing Interlock Random Retests
Whether it’s your first time using an ignition interlock device or you’re just looking for a refresher, we’ll guide you through how to successfully pass a random retest while driving, so you're prepared every step of the way.
Each state requires ignition interlock devices to conduct random retests while you’re driving. This means you’ll need to provide additional breath samples while your vehicle is running to confirm you haven’t been drinking.
After you start your vehicle, it will prompt you to provide breath samples periodically, even if the vehicle is parked. When a retest is needed, your device will beep loudly. To avoid missing it, keep your radio volume low and windows up.
You are required to provide a breath sample whenever the device prompts you for a retest, but safety is key. Most states give you 3 to 15 minutes to complete the retest, allowing time to find a safe spot to provide a sample. If needed, pull off to the side of the road to complete the test safely.
If you fail to provide the retest or don’t pass, your vehicle won’t shut off, but your horn and lights may activate, signaling you to pull over and turn off the car. Depending on your state's regulations, you may enter a temporary lockout. Once the vehicle is off or the lockout ends, you’ll need to provide a passing breath sample to restart it.
