Random Retests
Each state requires ignition interlock devices to perform random retests while you are driving. This simply means that you will need to provide breath samples while the vehicle is running to prove you haven’t been drinking.

After your initial start, your vehicle will prompt you to provide additional breath samples for as long as it's on, even if it's parked. This additional testing is required by the state. Your device will beep when a re-test is required. Even though the beep is quite loud, it's a good idea to keep your radio volume fairly low and windows up so you don't miss it.
You are required to provide a breath sample any time the device asks for a retest, but it's also important that you do so safely. Most states will allow four to six minutes to provide the retest. This period allows you to find a safe time to provide a breath sample. If you are unable to find a safe time to provide a sample while driving, you can pull off to the side of the road.
If you fail to provide the rolling retest or provide a passing sample, your vehicle will not turn off, but your horn and lights may activate, signaling you to pull over and turn off your vehicle. Depending on your state regulations, you may enter a temporary lockout. You will be able to restart your vehicle after it has been turned off or the temporary lockout expires. In both cases, you must provide a passing breath sample to restart your vehicle.
Using an Ignition Interlock Device
The method of submitting a breath sample you will use may vary depending on your state requirements. You will receive instruction on how to use your ignition interlock device at installation, but your state specialist can also help answer any questions you may have.
Random retests are required by the state after you have started your vehicle and are driving down the road. A timer on your device will run, and then you will periodically need to submit a breath sample to ensure the absence of alcohol. Once your Intoxalock device indicates that you need to submit your retest, our drivers have a 6 minute window to provide the sample. This allows you to pull off the road to complete the breath sample if needed.
No, you should stay inside your car at all times once it has been started. Retests occur at random time frames and are required by the state. If you miss a retest, you could face consequences as determined by your state interlock compliance guidelines.
