The SD Ignition Interlock Program
Navigating life after a DUI can be challenging, but Intoxalock is here to lend a hand. With over two decades of expertise, we are dedicated to helping individuals complete ignition interlock requirements in South Dakota, paving the way for your return to the road with confidence.
In South Dakota, the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for drivers is .08 percent. If you are operating a vehicle over this limit, you’re considered to be driving while under the influence of alcohol. Penalties for a DUI conviction in South Dakota may include license revocation, jail time, fines, mandatory chemical dependency evaluations, and an ignition interlock device.
In 60 of South Dakota’s 66 counties, the 24/7 Sobriety program may be required as a condition of bond, sentence, probation, parole, child custody, or visitation orders. In these counties, the program may also be a prerequisite to receiving a restricted driver permit for drivers with multiple DUIs or a first-time offender with a BAC of .17 or greater. Intoxalock is the ONLY approved ignition interlock provider utilized by the state for this program.

South Dakota requires certain individuals convicted of DUI offenses to install an ignition interlock device as part of the state’s 24/7 Sobriety program. If you are required to install an IID device, it must be installed by the only approved provider, Intoxalock, to ensure all data collected by the IID is reported to the state’s monitoring authority.
Check the South Dakota state page for all DUI penalties.
When you are ready to install, you can make an appointment with your chosen provider. Intoxalock offers same-day installation services and has more locations than any other provider. Our state specialists can help you make an appointment and answer any questions you have, or you can make your own appointment if you prefer.
You should only remove the device once you have authorization from the state monitoring authority. You should not need to bring anything else, but you will have to pay the remaining monthly lease fee.
You should bring your South Dakota driver’s license, and may need to provide the name of the vehicle’s registered owner if you are not the owner.
An ignition interlock device is a smart breathalyzer system that adds an extra layer of safety by ensuring the driver is alcohol-free before allowing the car to start.
You will hear from your monitoring authority when you are authorized to remove the device. Do not remove the device early unless you have authorization, as this could be a violation of the state’s interlock policy.
