What is an Ignition Interlock Device?
Find out what an ignition interlock device is and how it works. IIDs are installed to prevent drinking and driving, the device requires a breath sample before starting the vehicle. If alcohol is detected on the drivers breathe, the vehicle won't start. Ignition interlock devices are widely used and have significantly reduced drunk driving incidents and fatalities.
How to Provide a Breath Sample
Using your vehicle is a little different when you have an IID installed. Get the details on how to use the blow-inhale-blow technique to provide a proper breath sample into your Intoxalock ignition interlock device, ensuring smooth and accurate results.
Random Retests
After starting your vehicle, you'll need to provide additional breath samples at random intervals as long as the engine is on. Learn how to perform a random retest safely, what happens if you miss or fail a retest, and how to handle these situations.
Calibrations
Throughout the duration of your ignition interlock lease, you'll need to schedule calibration appointments at your service center. Calibrations are state-required, so complete them by the due date to avoid service interruptions. Learn more about what to do, where to go, and tools that will be helpful during this process.
What Happens When you Fail a Test
If you fail a test before starting your vehicle, your Intoxalock device will prevent the car from starting. Depending on your state’s regulations, you may receive an immediate lockout if your start-up sample exceeds 0.08 BrAC. If your state allows a retest, you can provide another sample. However, if you fail again, the device may enter lockout mode, requiring service.

Service Lockout
A service lockout occurs when the system prevents the vehicle from starting due to various factors, requiring you to log into MyAccount or call Intoxalock to reset or replace the device before the countdown expires.
