The Most Common Ignition Interlock Problems and How to Fix Them

Man blowing into an ignition interlock device.

Ignition Interlock Devices (also referred to as IIDs, BAIIDs, car breathalyzers, and ignition interlock systems) are essential tools for individuals looking to restore their driving privileges after a drunk driving charge, such as a DUI. These devices prevent a vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver’s breath, ensuring safer roads.

Using an IID is straightforward, but understanding how to manage your device can make the process even smoother and more reliable, ensuring your IID works seamlessly. Join us as we explore various device problems and go over IID error codes, their meanings, and how to troubleshoot common interlock issues.

Common Ignition Interlock Device Problems

Like any technology, ignition interlock devices can occasionally run into issues. Below are some of the most common problems you might experience and how to address them effectively.

Device Lockout

A lockout is a common interlock issue that occurs when the IID detects alcohol on your breath, preventing the vehicle from starting. This can happen if you’ve consumed alcohol or if there are traces of alcohol-like substances in your breath from certain foods, mouthwashes, or medications.

To avoid a device lockout, it’s important to refrain from consuming alcohol in any form before driving. If a lockout occurs, you may need to wait a certain period before attempting to start the vehicle again, if permitted. Always follow the instructions on the device and contact Intoxalock for assistance if the issue persists or if you encounter specific error codes.

Battery Problems

Auto battery issues, like a weak charge or poor connections, can prevent your IID device from working properly. Regularly check your battery’s health and connections, and consider having your battery tested and, if necessary, replaced by a professional. If you do, contact Intoxalock customer service to ask if there are state requirements such as reporting or documenting your vehicle’s battery service while an IID is installed.

Device Won’t Turn On

If your IID won’t turn on, it could be due to a power issue or electrical problem. If you encounter this interlock device issue, check if the device is securely connected and if your car battery is charged. You may need to check your fuse box to see if any fuses need to be replaced. If the interlock device problem persists, contact Intoxalock’s customer service for further guidance.

Unresponsive Screen

An unresponsive screen could be due to software issues or physical damage to the IID. Contact customer service for assistance.

Contaminated Positive Reading

Contaminated readings can occur due to the presence of alcohol in mouthwash, medication, or certain foods. To avoid this interlock device problem, wait at least 15 minutes after consuming any such products before using the IID. Rinsing your mouth out with water can also help clear any residual alcohol.

Keeping a log of what you consumed before performing a breath test can help identify any patterns or specific products causing the issue. If contaminated positives continue, consult your state specialist to recalibrate your device.

Older Car Models

Older vehicles might have compatibility issues with interlock devices due to their electrical systems. If you experience problems, such as difficulty starting your car, it might be related to the car’s electrical system.

To reduce potential interlock device problems in older car models, make sure your car’s electrical components are in good working order and consider installing a new battery or updating electrical components if needed. Proper maintenance and timely updates can also help.

Troubleshooting Interlock Device Problems

Addressing common IID issues can often be done with simple troubleshooting steps. Regular maintenance and prompt troubleshooting can help you avoid unexpected issues, ensuring your IID device functions properly. Here’s how you can tackle common interlock system problems:

Wait a Bit After Eating or Drinking

Sometimes, common interlock issues can be caused by the things we eat. To avoid a failed breath test due to food contaminants, we recommend waiting at least 15 minutes after consuming food or drink before using your IID. This helps ensure no residual alcohol affects your breath sample. Rinsing your mouth with water before taking a breath test can also be helpful. Avoid using mouthwash that might have alcohol in it.

Use Sleep Mode

Battery issues are no fun, which is why Intoxalock devices have a sleep mode option to help protect your car battery and help eliminate interlock device problems. If allowed in your state, familiarize yourself with sleep mode and use it as needed, especially if your vehicle will be unused for extended periods. If allowed by your state, sleep mode can be activated by holding the button on your hand-held device for three seconds until you hear a beep.

Check Device Connections

If you are encountering interlock device problems, it is important to make sure all connections between the IID and your vehicle are secure. Loose connections can lead to power issues and device malfunctions. If you're noticing signs of wear or loose connections, reach out to a nearby service center to have them inspected and, if needed, replaced.

Keep Your IID Clean

Keeping your Intoxalock IID clean is important, but it is best to avoid using any chemicals or cleaning products. These substances can interfere, leading to incorrect readings. Instead, simply wipe down the exterior of the IID with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris. For tougher spots, lightly dampen the cloth with water. This ensures your device stays in top condition without risking its performance.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Extreme temperatures can affect the performance of your IID. To avoid temperature related interlock device issues, park your vehicle in a shaded area or garage to protect the device from extreme heat or cold temperatures. Using a sunshade on your windshield and keeping the car well-ventilated can also help.

Some states allow you to disconnect your handheld device and bring it inside to protect against the effects of extreme temperatures. IMPORTANT: not all states allow you to disconnect your device, and doing so could cause compliance issues. Be sure to check your state’s rules or call Intoxalock customer service to see if your state allows you to disconnect your hand-held device before doing so.

Follow Breath Test Instructions

Incorrect testing procedures can lead to interlock device problems such as IID errors, failed tests, and device lockouts. Following the breath test instructions provided by your IID and practicing the correct breath pattern – blow steadily and consistently – can help you pass the car breathalyzer test without issues.

Intoxalock Error Codes and Their Meaning

Intoxalock ignition interlock devices are designed to be straightforward and user-friendly, providing clear feedback to help you navigate any potential issues. They do an excellent job of identifying both user errors and device-related problems, making it easy to understand what’s happening, such as these examples:

  • Device has been disconnected: Your device had lost power longer than the time allotted by your state. Your device may enter into a Lock Out. If it does, please contact Intoxalock as soon as possible.
  • CAR BATT: Your car battery’s voltage is less than 10V. Please charge your battery.

However, in the unlikely event that you encounter an issue code on your device display that needs interpretation, (examples: Err 1, Err 2, Err3, etc.) it is important to reach out to an Intoxalock customer service agent. These codes can have different meanings depending on the specific situation, so getting expert guidance ensures that you are addressing the issue correctly and keeping everything on track.

Additional Messages You Might Encounter

In addition to the above error codes, you might see various messages indicating different issues. Here’s a guide to some common messages and their full meaning:

  • Not Enough Suction: You’re not blowing hard enough into the device. Ensure you’re using the correct breath pattern and try again.
  • Too Much Pressure: You’re blowing too hard. A steady, moderate breath is required for an accurate sample.
  • Invalid Sample Pressure: The pressure of your breath sample was inconsistent. Practice maintaining a steady pressure throughout the test.
  • Volume Too High: Your breath sample volume is too high. Try blowing more gently.
  • Too Soft: The breath sample was too soft. Blow with sufficient force to provide an accurate sample.
  • Invalid Breath Sample: The breath sample didn’t meet the required parameters. Follow the instructions closely and try again.

If you encounter other interlock error codes or messages, call Intoxalock at 888-283-5899 for assistance. And remember, keeping the user manual handy or downloading the Intoxalock Mobile App can provide quick reference to resolve common ignition system problems.

Failed breath test

What Happens if I Fail an Ignition Interlock Breath Test?

Failing a breath test will prevent your vehicle from starting and may have serious consequences. Repeated failures can lead to extended IID requirements, additional legal penalties, or a service lockout, depending on your state’s regulations.

If you fail a breath test, follow these steps:

  1. Stay Calm: The device is doing its job to keep you and others safe.
  2. Wait: The IID will lock out for a period. Use this time to make sure you’re ready to retest.
  3. Retest: Follow the instructions for retesting. Ensure you have not consumed anything that could affect the test.
  4. Contact Support: If you continue to fail, reach out to Intoxalock for further instructions.

To avoid failing a breath test, make sure you’re sober and confident using the device before driving. Watch the video below to learn how to start your vehicle or read our guide on how to pass a car breathalyzer test.
