New Jersey Requirements

New Jersey allows drivers to regain some driving privileges with early installation of a breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID). In New Jersey, interlock devices need to be installed by an approved provider, and the driver is responsible for the cost of renting the device. This guide will explain all the criteria you need to meet to qualify.

The NJ Ignition Interlock Program

As of February 19th, 2024, persons arrested for a DUI may voluntarily install an Ignition Interlock Device prior to their charges being fully adjudicated and obtain from NJMVC a driver’s license that notates they are legally allowed to drive the vehicle equipped with the IID. Clients who follow this process will receive day-for-day credit for early installation. Persons who are second and subsequent offenders and follow this process will receive one day of credit for every two days the device is installed.
