Kent Broadbent is Intoxalock’s 2020 Drunk Driving Prevention Scholarship Winner!
Kent Broadbent is the winner of this year’s Intoxalock Drunk Driving Prevention Scholarship! Every year, Intoxalock awards $3,000 to a college student attending a two or four-year institution. To enter, every student creates an original Public Service Announcement (PSA) video about the dangers of drunk driving. Kent is currently studying information systems management at Brigham Young University.
This year there were many creative, thoughtful entries, but Kent’s video stood out because of his unique twist on the topic. In his version, concerned friends and an ignition interlock device (IID) prevent a potential tragedy.

Q & A with Intoxalock Scholarship Winner Kent Broadbent
Why did you choose to apply for this Drunk Driving Prevention scholarship?
I enjoy film competitions and drunk driving prevention is a cause I care about. I was looking for scholarships and this one struck me not only as a good scholarship opportunity, but a good cause.
How did you come up with the idea for the video?
Often these kinds of PSAs focus on the darker elements of the subject material — the consequences of drunk driving in this case. I wanted to create a story that had a sense of tension and danger, but releases that tension in the end with a positive tone. It showcased not only the danger of drunk driving, but the Intoxalock device's role in prevention.
Are you interested in filmmaking or is it just something you did for the contest?
I've been involved in filmmaking since I was 15, so about nine years. For a while I wanted to be a visual effects artist, but the desire to tell my own stories pushed me to directing and cinematography. I had a really active imagination growing up and always wanted to take the images and stories in my head and get them into the world. Filmmaking let me do that and I was pretty obsessive about it through high school. I have worked in most areas of filmmaking, kind of a jack-of-all trades. Now I'm in school in a business/tech major and don't have as much opportunity to work on personal film projects. I enjoyed making one for this scholarship.
What are you studying?
I'm getting a bachelors of science in information systems and a masters of information systems management concurrently through BYU's Marriott School of Business.
How will this scholarship help your academic endeavors?
My goal is to graduate with my bachelors and masters debt-free. The program I am in is fairly competitive and this scholarship will help allow me to spend more time and energy on school and ultimately get more out of the experience.
What would you like to do after college?
I would love to work for Adobe or Blackmagic Design on the creative software that has given me a voice in filmmaking. More broadly I want to work in a technical business role at a well established company doing either data science, consulting or UX/UI. I'm planning on keeping up my filmmaking as a side hustle and have plans to make a feature film not too long after I graduate.
