Breathe Easy with Intoxalock: Ignition Interlock Solutions for Reduced Lung Capacity and Asthmatics

Living with reduced lung capacity can present numerous challenges, affecting daily activities and overall quality of life. At Intoxalock, we recognize that individuals required to use an ignition interlock device (IID) due to a DUI violation may have concerns about their ability to use standard IIDs if they have reduced lung capacity. This is especially true for those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other lung disorders. However, understanding how IID devices work and finding an ignition interlock provider with a user-friendly breath pattern can help ease anxiety and ensure IID compliance while maintaining your health and safety.

Navigating Ignition Interlock Device Breath Patterns with Reduced Lung Capacity

Ignition interlock devices are designed to prevent impaired driving by requiring a breath sample to measure breath alcohol concentration (BrAC). Each ignition interlock device provider has a slightly different device with variations in how to use and submit breath samples.

Intoxalock devices use a blow-inhale-blow breath pattern, which is widely accepted as the most accurate and user-friendly method. This technique requires the user to blow into the mouthpiece for a few seconds, inhale back in, and blow into the mouthpiece again.

This should be done in one smooth action without taking your mouth off the mouthpiece. The changes in breath patterns allow the device to accurately read a BrAC without requiring extreme force, making it easier for users with reduced lung capacity to successfully activate the device with the proper breathing pattern compared to straight blow ignition interlock devices.

Alternatively, where state regulations allow, Intoxalock's IIDs may be adjusted to a lower breath volume for easier use.

State-Specific Availability for Reduced Breath Volume Settings

The availability of reduced breath volume settings for IIDs varies by state due to differing regulations. Even with medical condition documentation, Intoxalock may not be permitted to adjust the breath pattern volume setting on your device in some states.

We encourage customers and partners to consult with an Intoxalock representative to understand the options available in your jurisdiction. Our team is equipped to help you learn the optimal breathing pattern and to explain how to apply for a reduced breathing pattern setting where allowed.

How to Apply for Setting Adjustment if You Have Reduced Lung Capacity

A breath-volume setting adjustment may not be necessary, but it may be allowed for added convenience in certain cases and states. If you or someone you know is dealing with a respiratory condition and would like to investigate whether they might qualify for a reduced breath setting adjustment on an Intoxalock IID, follow these steps:

  1. Contact Intoxalock: Our representatives are here to help you find the right solution that accommodates your medical needs.
  2. Consult Your Physician: Get documentation of your condition as this may be necessary to qualify for special accommodation.
  3. Stay Informed: Regulations can change, so keep in touch with us for the latest updates and solutions.

Recommendations for Asthmatic Customers Who Use Inhalers

Certain inhaler propellants could trigger a contaminated positive reading for alcohol in breathalyzer tests. However, this issue can be managed effectively.

Do not attempt to use your IID immediately after using an inhaler. Allow five to ten minutes after using your inhaler, or as close to that period as possible, before attempting to activate your IID. Take clearing breaths through your mouth while waiting.

If the IID does show alcohol in your breath, your state may allow time for a confirmation test. You will be prompted by your device to provide another sample. Typically, contaminants will dissipate shortly after, allowing you to provide a clean sample.

Commitment to Accessibility

Intoxalock is committed to making safety accessible for everyone. Intoxalock IIDs are capable of being successfully used by people with reduced lung capacity. Where states allow breath volume settings adjustments, Intoxalock can accommodate.
