5 Things Not to Do When You Have an Ignition Interlock Device
When you need an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle, the first thing you need to do is learn how to use the device. And you also need to understand things you shouldn’t do. We've compiled a list of the top five steps to practice when you have a car breathalyzer to keep things running smoothly.
1. Don't leave your car running.
Some people get in the habit of leaving their car running unattended for a few reasons: letting it warm up during cold weather, running into the gas station or chatting in the parking lot with coworkers after work. However, your ignition interlock device can prompt you for a random retest at any time, and if you’re not in the car to hear the alert, you could miss the test. This missed test counts as a failed test and will be reported, so make sure to shut off your vehicle whenever you aren’t driving.
2. Don't skip your calibration.
Device calibrations are required in each state to ensure your ignition interlock operates properly and accurately. Depending on your state, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. Skipping this important maintenance component can result in a lockout of your device.
3. Don't let your car go unstarted for long periods.
A car breathalyzer depends on your car battery to work. You need to have a fully operational battery for both your car and your interlock device to function properly. Drive your vehicle at least once every couple of days to ensure your battery stays in good working condition and doesn’t lose full charge.
4. Don't consume products with any ingredients ending in -ol or -yl.
Breathalyzers work by preventing you from starting a vehicle if your BrAC measures above the legal limit. So you need to avoid consuming alcohol or other products with ingredients that end in -ol or -yl — these contain alcohol molecules that will register as alcohol.
5. Don't tamper with the device.
You can find inaccurate articles and videos on the internet about how to bypass your device so that you don’t have to provide a breath sample. All this information is a myth, and attempting to tamper with your device is illegal. These attempts will be reported and can lead to severe legal action and penalties.
Learning how to use your device is easy once you get used to it. Make sure you know your state’s laws, as every state has different ignition interlock requirements.
