Potential Ignition Interlock Penalties Help Deter DUIs: New Study Reveals Impact
Drinking and driving is a serious issue that causes thousands of deaths each year and costs billions of dollars. Ignition interlock devices (IIDs) are a tool to help prevent driving under the influence (“DUIs”) by ensuring drivers can’t start their cars if they’ve been drinking.
Usually, these devices are installed after someone is convicted of a DUI. However, a new study found that just knowing they might have to use an IID could stop some people from drinking and driving in the first place.
Study Overview
The study looked at 583 people who had each had at least one alcoholic drink in the past week. Participants were given different “what if” situations about drinking and driving with possible penalties, including jail time, fines, license suspensions, alcohol treatment, and having an interlock device installed for one year. They were also told different chances of being caught, either a low 1% chance or a higher 20% chance.
Key Findings: Ignition Interlock Penalties Are Effective DUI Deterrents
The study found that the threat of requiring an ignition interlock device for one year worked just as well at stopping people from drinking and driving as:
- Increasing the fine by $2,000
- Adding 10 more days of jail time
- Raising the chances of being caught by 20 times
While jail and fines are commonly known DUI penalties, the threat of an IID seems to work just as well or better at preventing drinking and driving. Unlike jail time, an ignition interlock device can help people make better decisions without criminalizing them.
Why Ignition Interlock Requirements Matter
This study shows that ignition interlock devices might prevent drinking and driving for the general public, not just people who already have a DUI. With more people aware of IID requirements, we could see fewer DUI incidents and a safer driving experience for everyone.
Based on these findings, promoting new DUI laws—especially those involving IID requirements—could serve as an effective deterrent against drunk driving. When drivers understand that a DUI conviction could lead to mandatory IID installation, this knowledge alone can create a preventive effect. People may think twice before getting behind the wheel after drinking, knowing they may face the responsibility of using an IID long-term.
Strong IID requirements, particularly when widely publicized, remind drivers that the consequences of impaired driving are immediate and measurable. This might help explain why IID programs are highly effective, allowing states to proactively address drunk driving, support public safety, and foster a culture that prioritizes responsible driving behavior.
